Presentation of the encyclopedia at the XXVІI Minsk International Book Exhibition

On February 7, 2020 as part of the XXVІI Minsk International Book Exhibition and Fair the presentation of the encyclopedia “Брест. Брэст. Brest. 1000” was held. In addition to the staff of the publishing house “Belarusian Encyclopedia named after P. Brovka”, the event was attended by the head of the Chair of History of Slavic Nations, Doctor of Historical Sciences, Professor Alexander Vabischevich, who was the coordinator of the project, the compiler of the encyclopedia.

Minsk International Book Exhibition and Fair, which has already become a traditional annual cultural and educational event of the Republic of Belarus, is one of the largest professional book exhibitions in the post-Soviet area. This year it was held on February 5-9 under the slogan “Belarus is an open book”. Book publishers from more than 30 countries of near and far abroad took part in it.

At the presentation Alexander Vabischevich noted the innovative character of the publication. It contains a huge amount of valuable material about different aspects of the town life: history, population, nature, economy, architecture and town-planning, physical culture, sports and tourism, education, science, culture, religion, and others. The book has an excellent artistic and printing performance, is in demand among residents and guests of the town.

At the presentation there was also a discussion about the rich and original heritage of Brest, its historical symbols, cultural treasures, famous enterprises and institutions, about the current fruitful and creative work of the inhabitants, honoured people of the town.

In preparation of the encyclopedia for the 1000th anniversary of Brest, teachers and staff of the Brest State A. S. Pushkin University were actively involved. The main achievements of the University, its highly qualified staff potential, contribution to the development of all spheres of life of Brest, Brest region and the country are reflected in the illustrated article, a number of thematic and biographical articles.

At the end of the book fair it became known that the publishing house “Belarusian Encyclopedia named after Petrus Brovka” received a Diploma of the first degree in the nomination “Golden Tablets” for the book. The Encyclopedia also participates in the competition for the best local history publication for 2017-2019, the results of which will be summed up in March this year at the I Republican Forum of Local History of Belarus.
