"I have to work at University": Self-government Day at BrSU

On November 17 at Brest State A.S. Pushkin University a range of events dedicated to the main student holiday – Student Day – was held. In all faculties on that day colorful wall newspapers were hung and intellectual games, contests, quizzes and debates were held. The students were organizing dancing during breaks and pleased with their creativity all the "residents" of the university. But besides all this, in the framework of Self-government Day the chosen students were allowed to perform the work of the teachers and administrative staff of the university.

The students, that had been substituting administrative staff of the university for a day, participated in the discussion meetings with the deans and reported to the rector and the vice-rectors. During discussion meetings they had to tackle different serious issues concerning the improvement of training activities and vocational guidance, they also had to familiarize with the regulatory legal documents to consider business ideas and projects within the start-up movement. Temporary administrative staff contributed to the development of "The Student Code of Ethics".

The students, that had been substituting teaching staff of the university for a day, were preparing for lectures and seminars with excitement, which however did not prevent them from accomplishing their educational task with confidence. Young teachers noted that the classes arranged by the students were very important and interesting as they brought the diversity of extraordinary views and experience of young people to the educational process. Moreover, the students considered that affording them such an opportunity to teach at university was also an expression of confidence of the university administration in knowledge and skills of the students.

The student of the Faculty of Biology Dar’ia Zhuchko said that it was a good opportunity to prepare for teaching practice in schools. According to her words the participation in Self-government Day helped to look at herself from another angle, to analyze mistakes and draw the appropriate conclusions.

The results of Self-government Day were summarized at the joint meeting with the university administration and the students that had been substituting administrative staff of the university for a day. At the joint meeting the students shared their impressions and discussed questions they had to solve. Students encountered problems related to dormitories and debts. It is important that all the duties were performed properly.

In closing remarks, the university administration wished all the students not to stop at the achieved. The students expressed their gratitude to the university for the opportunity to perform the work of the administrative staff.
