A day of British Culture

On the 21 of December a remarkable event took place in the cultural life of historical department – a day of British Culture. This event has been organised on the faculty for many years, like other similar events – the Days of culture of Africa, Latin America, Venezuela, countries of Western Europe etc. That day students and lecturers had the opportunity to immerse themselves in the daily life of Great Britain and to learn different aspects of its cultural life.

The event started with a performance of "One day in the life of Hogwarts." Participants and spectators recollected the legendary school of witchcraft and wizardry – the alma mater of Harry Potter. The appropriate English music helped participants to plunge into mysterious atmosphere of Hogwarts. There was also a photo zone. A fun quest-game “A Very English Murder” was taking place in the lobby of the 5th floor from 11.25 to 11.55. Of course the murder was investigated by Sherlock Holmes and Dr.Watson. During the next break the installation "On the streets of London" was being held on the 5th floor. The hall of the 5th floor was filled with British attributes. Here you can see the samples of British pop music and youth subcultures, and the students carried out a quest quiz "Do you know the History of Great Britain?"

At 15.00 in the auditorium 317 The Queen (played by a student of the historical department) held a reception, during which the awarding ceremony of the London Royal Society was held and the Title of Sir was given to the students who are actively involved in science and cultural life of the department. In addition to the lecturers and students of the department, the students of lyceums and grammar schools took part in the ceremony. In a solemn atmosphere the rewarding of the winners of Regional Olympiad on General history among senior pupils of comprehensive schools, lyceums and gymnasiums was held. Then the participants of the event went to the meeting of the discussion club under the leadership of Professor E. S. Rosenblatt, where he discussed the stereotypes about Britain and the British.

The event ended with a British tea party "five-o-clock", arranged in the customs of British tea culture.

The day of British Culture was organized by the Department of General history. Active assistance in the preparation of the event was provided by the Dean of the faculty E. A. Burik and Vice Dean E. U. Zanko, as well as students – members of scientific society of the faculty. The organizers also express their gratitude to the trade Union Committee of students of the University and Department of criminal law disciplines for assistance in the preparation of the event.
